whorange of the week: tanya aguiñiga
there are people you admire and then there are those that you file under "the coolest people ever" category. los angeles based furniture/textile designer tanya aguiñiga is one of those people. i had the pleasure of meeting the amazing tanya at the LA biz ladies meet up tuesday night, and let me tell you, this lady's got skills.
tanya grew up in tijuana, mexico, and for 18 years, she crossed the US border everyday to attend school in the US. this experience informed her work as she explored the social, economic, and political discrepancies between san diego and tijuana. as a result, tanya has dedicated much of her time to using art as a vehicle for community empowerment and bringing awareness to the rights of migrant workers through art installations across mexico and the US.

tanya subscribes to the philosophy of living and working with honesty and passion. she possesses a thoughtful, quirky, and warm spirit that reflects in her contemporary furniture and colorful, felted accessories. she sketches lamps inspired by fancy hairdos and considers discarded objects to be the best building blocks for beautiful and sustainable pieces.
next month, a permanent installation of tanya's work will be part of the new children’s museum of san diego as a “texture forest” for toddlers. how cool is this...
let's face it...tanya rocks! which is why she is my whorange of the week. a tip of the tiara to you, miss aguiñiga!

Is that forest made of paper!? Love it. We own three of those little felt birds. They hang out in our studio.
