sometimes, all a girl needs is a pixie cut, a collection of rainbow tights, and a four leaf clover.
and maybe a cookie.

remember, kittens...just a few floral touches can take your monday hair from so-so to so-right.

A: miss joan crawford, in 1946, for her lead role in "mildred pierce."

kittens, one of my biggest heroes passed away last friday -- tura satana.
i first saw tura satana in russ meyers' cult classic film "faster, pussycat! kill! kill." i was 19-years-old at the time and thrilled to see tura -- a buxom asian woman -- slinging one liners and kicking ass. as a chinese girl who loved movies but was tired of seeing asian actresses resigned to selling laundry detergent or playing geishas, i applauded tura satana's portrayal of varla -- the karate-chopping, murderous go-go dancer on the run.
for years following, i styled my hair like tura, liquid lined my eyes like tura, and even go-go danced at a few clubs in san francisco like tura (only i wore more clothing). i never achieved her bod, but my hair looked fabulous.
so, in many ways, tura satana shaped my style and nurtured my twisted spirit. and for that, i am forever grateful.
you will be missed, miss tura. rest in fabulous peace. xoxo.
